New Sephora Goodies

My recent Sephora purchases...

Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Rose.  A very pigmented pink shade that looks almost red but less harsh.  The formula is great...long lasting and not sticky.  I have another Laura Mercier gloss and it's my favorite consistency of any gloss I've ever tried.
I've wanted to try Living Proof products for a while.  I'm in a hair rut since I'm growing it out for the wedding.  I've also been getting less layers (on purpose) and even though I'm going for regular trims I'm still getting some frizz and flyaways.  This little sampler box seemed like a great way to try them out.  I'm also interested in the volumizing products but for the first round I think this is a great set for the price.  It comes with a shampoo, conditioner, styling cream, and a small sample of leave it conditioner.

And just for fun I used a code for a vinyl sephora makeup bag full of deluxe products.  I chose the "classic look" bag that included:

  • Lancome Bi-Facial Double Action Eye Makeup Remover
  • Stila "in the light" eye shadow palette
  • Cartier Baiser Vole Eau de Parfum
  • LILY by Stella McCartney Eau de Parfum
  • Nars Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in New Lover
  • MUFE HD Powder
  • Murad Clarifying Cleanser
  • Sephora Foundation Primer
  • Lancome Hypnose Star in Noir Midnight

For reference the Nars product in the swatch on top and my new Laura Mercier gloss is on the bottom.  I can't wait to try out all these goodies.  I've already paired my new Nars lip pencil with my laura mercier gloss and found the perfect, glossy cranberry lip to wear throughout the holidays!

Recent Purchases

I received an email this morning from Sephora that there was a new 500 beauty point perk for a Laura Mercier kit.  I needed to replenish my Two faced shadow insurance and my Nars Laguna Bronzer so I went ahead and purchased them so I could add this great perk to my cart.  I've not tried that many LM products so it's a good opportunity to get several samples.  As a special surprise for me, not only did I qualify for free shipping but I also had $19 in store credit where I returned something back in the spring and totally forgot about it.
On Sunday R and I visited the Winterville Watermelon festival.  We were bored and wanted something "different" to do....and I wanted a funnel cake.  I found a booth where a local craftsman had several woodworks for sale.  We walked away with this bird house for $15.  I can't believe it, if we had purchased this at a pottery or garden store we wouldn't have bought it for less than $40.  I can't wait to see it hanging in our back yard.

I've been wanting a Hobo wallet/clutch for a while but with all the wedding expenses I couldn't justify spending $130 on one.  I was looking at a local department store and found a Hobo in a discontinued pattern in the clearance section marked down to $77.  I asked if I could use the 20% off coupon from the Sunday circular on redline clearance and they allowed it!  I walked away with this bag for less than half of the original pricetag.  I love the pattern!
Kate Spade sent an email last week welcoming me to a secret sale / 2 day event.  It coincided with the big Lilly Pulitzer end of season sale so I had a big decision to make.  I couldn't give up a great deal on a handbag though.  A few months ago I purchased a fun Kate Spade bag in coral and I've carried it most of the summer.  I'll continue to carry it into the fall since bright colors are in but I'm sure closer to winter I'll need a more neutral option.  This Southport Avenue Aurelia in Hazel is beautiful and thanks to the sale I received it 65% off.
When I found out my start date for my new position at work I knew I would need a different planner as my old one had my schedule for only 2 clinics for the upcoming months.  I decided it would be great to have a fun one to also keep my important wedding dates and chores in.  This Lilly Pulitzer agenda goes from August 2012 to December 2013 and has several sections.  There is a full calendar or "quick look" monthly calendar in the middle where I keep all wedding related information.  There is a more extensive "weekly calendar" in the back where I can write all my work related notes and tasks.
A bauble necklace in pink.  I've wanted one of these for a while so when I was in Raleigh I popped by a favorite boutique and purchased it.  They had so many colors - yellow, mustard, green, blue, mint, pink, purple, burgandy, white....I wasn't sure which one to get.  I wear a lot of black and I knew the pink one would really pop.  I plan on wearing this with my rehearsal dinner dress so I can consider it a wedding expense.  I've already worn this necklace twice this week (once to work and once out with friends) and it looks great with my new Hobo clutch.
I actually bought a few other items that I don't have photos for - a new flowy black top and two jcrew pencil skirts that were marked down from the already clearance price.  Now I'm on a personal spending freeze - I want a pair of booties from DSW (but they don't count because I have a store credit to spend).  I can't purchase anything else that isn't wedding related or a Christmas gift for someone else.  August has been a definite splurge month for me so now it's time to tighten up the wallet.

Makeup Review - MUFE Mat Velvet Foundation

I have been using this product for weeks and I feel that I can accurately say this is one of the best foundations I've ever used.

Color - MUFE foundation comes in a wide variety of skin shades.  Mine is Ivory and it doesn't go on yellow based as some of the Nars / Laura Mercier foundations I've tested.  It blends naturally with my natural skin color.

Staying Power - It holds up to Carolina humidity and that is a top priority for me.  It has held up on a hot day when I was helping R move and some hot beach nights.  Now as for it being matte...yes and no.  I'd say for the most part, indoors while I'm at work I stay shine free.  If I'm going to be active or outside of course I still get shiny so I use powder and rice paper to neaten my appearance.

Coverage - In my experience it would be a medium coverage foundation.  I've used an Estee Lauder 18 hour foundation before that was full coverage and Korres WRF which is light coverage - this is in between.  All the redness is covered and my skin tone is even.  It even covered some sunburn that I had around my hairline, no one would have ever known.

Final word - I have sensitive, combination skin and I occasionally get breakouts.  I haven't had any bumps that I can relate to this product. This product is oil free and water resistant but is easily removed with my Avalon Organics face wash or my Olay cleansing cloths.  It's also light which is nice, on hot humid days I don't want a heavy layer of makeup on my skin and this one doesn't feel like a mask.  It doesn't contain sunscreen so that is an important consideration if you don't wear a daily lotion that contains one.

Review: Smashbox Perfectly Polished Lids

So I received the Smashbox Perfectly Polished Lids for free as my 500 point bonus from Sephora.  I don't think it's being offered anymore since I've been using it for several weeks but the products are sold through the line in their full size.

The Cream Eye Liner in Midnight Brown is great!  In fact its probably my favorite brown so far and I love the creamy texture, it really glides with no tugging.  The color is dark brown and very natural looking.

Eye Shadow Trio in Vanilla, Champagne and Brazilian Bronze.  This is a great trio, the colors work great together.  Each shadow has a creamy texture with a slight amount of shimmer.  I love the Bronze and the Vanilla so I tend to use those together.  The Champagne oxidizes a little on my lid as a slightly red color which is so sad because it really is a great neutral but it doesn't work on me.  I loved this trio so much that I've used it as my sole eyeshadow in the past several weeks.

Photo Finish Lid Primer....eh it's okay.  I don't love it as much as I love Two Face Shadow Insurance.  It takes a little extra effort to blend it out.

Lash DNA Mascara.  I love the formula.  The brush is HUGE with the old fashioned synthetic bristles;  it gives great definition and length.  The color is great, formula doesn't flake and it stays put all day.  The size of the brush does make it difficult to apply to the lashes though, because it is so big you have to be super diligent not to ruin the rest of your eye makeup.  I would purchase this though, but my needs are only for mascara on my upper lashes.  I don't think this would work at all for lower lashes.

Product review: new blush and eyeliner

I think I made my position on the Urban Decay 24/7 liner in bourbon known in my Sephora Purchases post. But I'll review it anyway. This liner goes on smooth in a deep bronze color. There is some sparkle so contact lenses wearers beware! I have had issues with the sparkles getting in my eyes. It lasts a good 8-9 hours - I don't have to touch up until evening time with is great but thats with all urban decay liners. The color is rich and glides on so there is no tugging or need to bear a lot of weight on the pencil. The best part is, the color doesn't oxidize as badly as most brown shades do on my eyelids. Now....for me personally, it doesn't work. It's a great product but I don't necessarily love it with my eye color. I've tried many brown shades through the years but usually only black or brown black eyeliners work on me. This shade with my light eyes kind of makes them a little red. I'm probably going to keep it but I haven't made up my mind yet.
I bought this blush sight unseen based on reviews from the sephora.com website. Not super smart in hindsight but I knew I could return it if it didn't work. Lucky for me I love it! It gives the illusion of a tan but not in the way a bronzer does; it's just a really pretty slightly peachy neutral that works on light skin. It can be layered for darker skintones but a really light hand and a fluffy brush are necessary for skin as pale as mine. I'm very satisified with this purchase and I have made it my go to daytime blush.

Sephora Birthday Purchases

I bought these makeup items for myself a few weeks ago for my birthday. I'll probably be ready to review them soon because I've been wearing them exclusively since I got them. Originally I went into Sephora looking some "photo" appropriate makeup to play with before my best friend's wedding. I know I've found the right blush and foundation!
Nars Madly Blush. Just seeing this in the store it looks...blah. I would have never picked it up if it hadn't gotten so many good reviews. On my pale skin it shows up as a natural shade, it really doesn't even look like blush. It gives me the best color though, even an illusion that I have had some sun on my cheeks. Urban Decay Bourbon. After falling in love with Zero I thought I'd give this a try for summer. I love to swipe a bronze shade on my eyeline and forgo all the shadow. It is a beautiful deep metallic bronze but it isn't right for me. It brings out the red undertones in my eyelid and even makes my eyes look red. Some "bronzy and coppery" colors oxidize in a weird way on my skin. But I wouldn't hesitate to tell someone else to try it, the color is great, it just doesn't work on me.
MUFE Mat Velvet. LOVE THIS. I still like my beloved Korres but this provides a little more coverage and it doesn't have SPF so it should photograph beautifully. My shade is Ivory and it is a perfect match. I wouldn't say it's truely "matte", my skin looks very natural when I put it on but a few hours later I definitely have some shine. I don't mind, I expect to have to do a few touchups during the day. I have tried other matte products that almost make the skin powdery looking; some of them are sometimes hard to blend.
This was a free perk from Sephora and it is a pretty good one. I LOVE the cream eyeliner, in fact I like it better than the bourbon eyeliner that I purchased. The only downside is the kit didn't come with an eye liner brush, it would have been nice to have a small travel one. I have a sigma eyeliner brush and a coastal scents one that I love but I feel like one should have been included in this kit. The neutral eyeshadows are perfect for summer, I've been wearing them to work mostly. I haven't tried the primer and I'll definitely be reviewing the lashDNA mascara.

Product Review: Maybelline One by One Volum Express

So I picked up this mascara after a glowing review from TiffanyD on youtube. I was more than pleased with my CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion but I wanted to try something new and my current tube was getting "dry" so I was getting some flakes on my cheeks by mid afternoon. This mascara really has a great formula...not too wet...not too dry. No flakes, great seperation, nice dark color, great volume and length - I'm pleased with it. I like the brush too, its a synthetic brush with plastic bristles that isn't quite as thick and sturdy as the Covergirl brush but it really glides through the lashes to create definition. The price was approx $6. The ONLY downside is the ugly, Ugly, UGLY packaging. I know I ranted about the ugly lashblast orange tubes but at least that is a color found in nature, this tube is neon coral with a bright teal band under the cap and matching teal writing. Why oh why does maybelline have such ugly packaging? I don't need fancy or chic packaging to have a great product but it does make it slightly more appealing. And yes I realize you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and it should always be whats on the inside that counts. For $6 I'd be okay with just plain packaging without ugly colors or writing all over the tube. It is a great product. I would buy it again. I just wish Maybelline would have a little makeover with some of their products because it's not as appealing as the actual formula of the makeup.

Challenge Day 21 - Favorite Lipstick

This has been the easiest challenge day so far. I only have about four lipsticks so it's easy to pick favorites.
I wear this one during the day. Benefit's Ladys Choice. It's a "same shade as my natural lips" color that goes with every day makeup look. It's not really a nude but it isn't pink either, just a perfect natural lip color that enhances my look. The formula is super creamy so I have to keep reapplying it especially if I skipped lipliner but I don't need additional lip balm. I wear this one at night or when I need to dress up. MAC High Strung. This lipstick is hard to describe. There are gold / silver flecks in the lipstick and it looks pinky/bronze on me. This looks best with a darker eye. It's very drying so I have to layer it over lip balm and usually I dab a bit of gloss over the top.

Challenge Day 20 - Favorite Mascara

I'm not sure what my favorite mascara is. Lately I've been very "blah" with everything I've tried. This has been my mascara of choice for the past year...CoverGirl Lash Blast and most recently I've been using the Lash Blast Fusion. It's good mascara, it doesn't flake, there is great definition and volume, and really I can't complain. I also can't say I LOVE it. I think when my month is up I'm going to search for a new product just to see what else is out there. I've heard good things about Tarte and Mally as well as Maybelline One by One and L'Oreal Million lashes so those are probably the brands / products I'm going to be trying. Again this is a fantastic mascara but I think I'm ready to try something new.

I'm sure I made the "good" list this year

I made a full year without buying a truck load of makeup! So I definitely slipped up with a couple of glosses and the Alice in Wonderland palette earlier in the year but compared to years past this has been a minimal beauty product buying year. I missed Sephora friends and family and passed up the 20% entire order promotion. But when I received my $20 gift card a week ago I definitely wanted to use it and I knew just the items that could stuff my stocking! Two Faced Shadow Insurance. I've been using this for over a year and I was almost out. This is really just a replacement but I love it so much.
Nars Orgasm Blush and Laguna Bronzer Duo. I've wanted this for a long time so it's my splurge. I test the blush every time I go to Sephora. Since I plan on traveling quite a bit between my apartment and moms house I wanted some multipurpose products to cut down on the size of my makeup bag. At least thats my excuse.
I purchased these dryer balls from Bed Bath and Beyond a week ago. I haven't used them yet but I hope they work. Apparently they can replace fabric softener and cut down on drying time. Yes it sounds too good to be true but they weren't expensive so I'm willing to experiment. If anything good comes out of it, I'll report back.

New Sephora Items

Benefit Eye Bright. This is a product that is nice to have on hand but not a necessity. I haven't used this every day since I purchased it and I've noticed that the days I do take the time to use it I look much more "awake". I like to apply it to the inner corner of my eyes and just underneath my brow arch and pat it in with my finger - its a trick that makeup artist have used for decades and I'm definitely a convert. Today I didn't wear any eye product other than this and mascara.
Smashbox Camera Ready Concealer Stick. I bought this after I hated the Benefit Boing Concealer and I really like it. This concealer is great for lightening and brightening the undereye area but it probably isn't the best choice for blemishes. I also like to use it for the tiny bit of redness I sometimes get around my nose and it completely covers the area while "brightening" the skin. This probably will not be my HG concealer but I'll use the whole tube...I do love it for undereye circles.
Marc Jacobs Daisy (I bought the rollerball to keep in my purse). LOVE LOVE LOVE. This is my new daytime scent. I'm currently on the final few days of my Stella Sheer fragrance (I've been wearing it nearly a year) and I wanted to try something new. Not to mention some of the traveling I've been doing lately, I really didn't want a big clunky perfume bottle to carry around. I probably will ask for the full size bottle for Christmas - the scent is clean and feminine without being "too much" for my job in healthcare.
Lancome Flash Bronzer Anti Age. The jury is still out on this product. I've been using it at night to give me a glow in the morning...I really don't like the instant bronzer in it because it makes my face look "dirty" but I love the color the self tanner gives me in the mornings. One pump does my face and neck and it's 100% less damaging than a sun tan. I'd say it's worth trying and Lancome will let you return it for store credit if you don't like it. I'll probably use this bottle as the "glow" is perfect for fall and winter but eventually I want to try Clarins Self Tanning Milk because I've read such good reviews on it.

Beauty Product Reviews

In the past month I have added four products to my regimen and I thought I'd give a quick review on each. Korres Quercetine and Oak Primer - LOVE LOVE LOVE. This is silicone free and lightweight and actually is perfect for my skin in the summer without a moisturizer. I haven't had any breakouts and actually I think it has improved the overall feel of my skin. It smells fresh and I think the size will last at least three months. This will be a repurchase for me and it makes me want to try other products from this line.
L'Oreal True Match Natural Mascara in Black Brown. This is suppose to be 97% natural (or something like that), the packaging is also suppose to be more eco friendly. I love the shade, perfect for brunettes and very natural for day wear. The brush is very similar to the L'Oreal Voluminous which is my absolute favorite mascara. The formula holds curl without flaking but I did see some smudges on my lower lashline at the very end of the day. Overall a pretty good mascara, I'm a contact lense wearer and this did not aggravate my eyes. I would actually like to try this is black so I'll probably give this one a go for a few months. Don't be surprised if I go back to Voluminous....I always do.
Benefit Boiing concealer in Shade 1. Industrial strength? Used by professionals with actors under hot bright lights? This product does not live up to the hype and in my opinion not up to the company claims either. I love that it blends well and if you only need to cover a few red spots this might be a good choice but absolutely it does nothing for undereye circles. I don't even have terrible discoloration under my eyes and this didn't work for me. It doesn't stay either, even with powder on top it needs to be reapplied when I get home from work. I'll be exchanging this product tomorrow - the search for HG concealer continues!
Revlon Brow Fantasy in Light Brown. I DO NOT OVERPLUCK MY BROWS! I can not tell you how many times I have told friends, family, boyfriends, etc in the past. The good Lord did not see fit to give me a full brow line, I have a very thin line of hair with a few strays underneath that I pluck away - I never put my tweezers near my brow line because I need each and every hair! I have several products tagged to try from Benefit Brow Zing to the Anastasia brow products but I recently read a product review in a magazine raving about Brow Fantasy and I figured its cheap, I can buy it anywhere, I have nothing to lose. I really like it! I can't say it's necessarily HG but the color works for my medium brown hair and if feathered correctly it doesn't look like drawn on brows. The gel on the other side is what really makes it natural, just a quick swipe keeps them in place and darkens the hair a tiny bit, you just have to be careful to make sure the wide brush doesn't touch the skin under the brow. I would repurchase this, I still wouldn't mind trying the other products on my list as a splurge but this is a nice affordable option.

New Goodies!

I picked up a couple of items at Sephora this past weekend. I'm hoping to review them after a couple of weeks. This is Korres Antiaging Primer. I wanted to find something that was lightweight and could work alone or with daily lotion. The antiaging benefits and the fact that korres is all natural are big bonuses. I don't want to jump ahead of myself as I've only used this a few days but so far I like it.
Boi-ing Concealer by Benefit. This is a cult product and I guess I wanted to see why everyone raves about it. My concealer is officially out of date so I decided to try something other than my beloved MAC, this product is WAY more then and only comes in three shades. I'm not a big fan of the screw lid versus a flip cap just because of the inconvenience. I guess I got off on the wrong foot with this product but I'll do an official review once I've gotten used to it.

Weekend Shopping Spree

My Purchases: Essie Polishes - Mink Muffs, Damsel in a Dress, Neo Whimsical
Philosophy Lip Gloss in Cinnamon Buns and L'Oreal Voluminous in Carbon Black
Mink Muffs after 2 coats, please excuse the mess. I took this photo before bed when my nails were slightly wet still.

Charlotte Russe Basic Tanks for layering $7.50 ea and earrings $4.00 Victoria's Secret Panties 7 for $25 (1 is in the wash)

My boyfriend came for a 3 day weekend and we had so much fun. We tried out a brazillian resturant that there were so many reviews for. The experience was worth every penny and the food was delicious. For one price we had unlimited salad bar that had lots of grilled veggies, cheeses as well as typical salad ingredients and the waiters brought 8 types of meat to our table in rotation and you let them know if you'd like some or not. There were several cuts of steak, sausage, marinated pork, chicken, and my favorite cinnamon grilled pineapple. It was kind of an upscale, all you can eat joint with a brazillian twist. An extra plus - the sangria was fantastic!

We saw Alice in Wonderland 3D (my second time) and I'm definitely in love, this is a must own for me. We did a little shopping i.e the mall and Ulta for me and Dicks Sporting Goods and Best Buy for him. I went to walmart and purchased a few DVDs (New Moon of course was one of them). We took a morning trip to Ikea but left empty handed. I grabbed a catelog on the way out for some storage ideas, I LOVE their closet systems.
I probably won't see him again until my birthday so I'm glad we had such a fun few days.

Review: Urban Decay Alice in Wonderland Palette

I typically do not buy "limited edition" or kitschy type beauty products, unfortunately I met my match. I could not have turned this down if I tried and BELIEVE me I attempted to talk myself out of it. Blah, I'm such a sucker. It made the deal a little sweeter when I discovered it was getting harder to find and my Sephora only had 2 left. Behold...
I never stood a chance. The packaging! The colors! Look at that cutie travel size primer potion! I have been using this on a daily basis, Mushroom, Mad Hatter, and Vorpal are the three I'm wearing to work the most. Most of the shades are a bit shimmery for work but I actually don't own a lot of really fun eyeshadow colors so this was a good way to experiment while getting some safe shades as well. Look at that turquoise eyeliner, perfect for a pop of color this summer right?!?!
I'm too excited about this movie, it technically had it's first showing last night at midnight in my area but of course stupid work got in my way. Thanks to fandango I will have my ticket to (drumroll ) Alice in Wonderland 3D, the IMAX Experience. SO FLIPPING EXCITED!

Makeup Tips for Glasses Wearers

Honestly you can type the title of this post in youtube and get lots of helpful videos, some of which I have watched and inspired this post. Mostly this is my opinion through trial and error. My eyes have been insanely dry this winter as I was battling viral conjunctivitis (which can last weeks by the way) so I've been stuck wearing my Kate Spade Matilda glasses (pictured above). I've gotten several compliments as these glasses look chic with my new side swept bangs but I can't wait to get back into my contacts again.
1. Matte shadows are definitely the way to go. I've been using MAC Naked Lunch on the lid with Handwritten in the crease and outer corner and a bit of MAC cream color base in Shell on the brow bone.
2. Define the brows. I've been using define a brow from Maybelline for years followed with their gel and it works well for me.
3. I keep my cheeks subdued, some peach blush Maybelline Mousse blush in Peach satin followed by MAC beauty powder blush in Shy Girl to set it.
4. Use minimal eyeliner and lots of mascara. I'm near-sited so my glasses make my eyes appear smaller, I lightly line the outer 2/3 of my lash line on top and lower 1/2 slightly under the lashline using brown kohl liner, mine is Prestige Kohl Liner in Charcoal Brown. Mascara helps open the eye, I apply a couple of coats of Almay nourishing 1 coat volumizing mascara.
5. Lipstick is the key to balancing the face. Because my glasses are wide and dark brown there is a lot of color near the top half of my face, wearing lipstick really polishes the look. Recently I've been wearing NYC Brandy Sparkle (a bronzy pink color) but I also love Smashbox gloss in Radiant. I would defintitely skip on the nude lip and try to find something with more color.

Beauty Vanity Organization - A work in Progress

I'm using the term "organization" lightly here, my things are really just thrown into drawers but I like watching everyone elses collections so here is my "little" loot.
Parsons chair from Kirklands, desk was a yard sale find, mirrors and tissue holder from TJ Maxx, plastic drawers from walmart.
Sephora Inspired Brush Holder with my Sigma Brush set and a few randoms
Perfume, Eyeliner, Mascara, and Nail Polish
Eye Products - cream liners, primer, random quads and duos. To the left I laid out my Coastal Scents Palette and my 2 MAC palettes that normally go on top. Looks like I had a powder spill on one of my smaller palettes.
Lips - lipsticks and lipglosses. In the back there I have a few hairbands and hair clips. Clearly this is raw footage, it doesn't always look this messy.
Face - bronzers, blushes, mineral foundation, concealer. Again I laid my MAC blush palette on the left but it normally goes on top of the blushes.
Bottom Drawers
Hair Tools - I told you it was thrown in together. My flat iron was in my bathroom so it did not get to make an appearance.
Randoms - I keep my nail kit in this one along with my roller set, some extra sponges, the gloves I use to apply self tanner and a makeup bag that has a bunch of samples and my extra contacts.
I'm really thinking I'd like to get one of these from Ross or Target to organize my palettes.
